Key Club Update
The South Western Key Club had a very busy fall semester of community and school service this year. The 114 members of the club logged 3,148 hours of service and have raised closed to $6,000 for local and national charitable organizations (through Powder Puff Football, selling roses, pecans, and coupon booklets for the Bon Ton Community Days sale).
The school year kicked off with a flurry of service activities including providing helpers for the local fireman’s carnivals, a red cross golf tournament, the Hanover Exchange Club’s 9/11 Healing Field, the Hanover Y’s Heart Walk, Guthrie Memorial Library’s Centennial Celebration, the Knights of Columbus stand at the Apple Harvest Festival, The YMCA’s Fall Fest, a local Diversity Summit, carrying sponsor banners in the Hanover Halloween Parade for the Jaycees, West Manheim Fall Fest, and a Vera Bradley Fundraiser for the local library. Throughout September and October, members of the Key Club could be seen taking tickets at the gate for all home football games.
In November, the club was busy around the halls of South Western High School getting ready for a variety of service projects. They started November with a successful blood drive for the Central PA Blood Bank, collecting 102 units of blood from 139 donors. The next day, they hosted over 630 spectators and 100 players at the 2011 Powder Puff Football Games, raising over $3,800 for the Ronald McDonald House of Hershey. The following week, Key Clubbers were seen along Grandview Road picking up trash for their first Adopt-a-Highway cleanup of the year and the next Saturday, another group of Key Clubbers were on the Hanover Square cleaning up leaves and debris in preparation for holiday decorations. A big focus in November was preparing to celebrate American Education Week by providing the faculty and staff with gifts and a Harry Potter Themed breakfast with entertainment by magician Marc Charisse, editor of The Evening Sun. Almost twenty members of the Key Club started their Thanksgiving break by volunteering at the Hanover Red Cross’s Hope for the Holidays Program, helping to package and deliver bags of groceries to almost 200 families during the holiday week.
December saw the Key Club engaging in many seasonal service projects, including helping the local Marine Corps League with Toys for Tots, Operation Claus at Hanover Honda, Breakfast with Santa at the Hanover Hispanic Center, wrapping gifts with the UCP of Central PA at the North Hanover Mall, helping with elementary school Shoppers Rooms, ushering for the school’s play “A Carol for Tiny Tim”, providing gifts for Student Council’s giving tree, and providing helpers for FBLA’s Holiday Babysitting event. In the beginning of December, 8 club members traveled to Gettysburg National Cemetery to assemble and place over 5,000 wreaths on the graves of soldiers with the National Wreath Project. At their December meeting, club members wrote holiday cards for our troops through the Red Cross’s Holiday Hero’s program. Finally, almost 40 members of the club helped over two days with the Red Cross’s Hope for the Holiday’s Christmas event. This event also included sorting the thousands of cans collected by the 2011 Feed-A-Friend Marathon- quite a task!
Members who are involved with peer tutoring, assisting teachers, babysitting at PTA and PTO meetings, and helping out wherever needed around the school also did many hours of service.
The club is looking forward to an equally busy spring of service to our “Home, School, and Community” and would like to thank the community, including the Hanover Kiwanis Club, our sponsor, for all of their support during the fall semester.
Record Breaker!
Chris Beaghan, a senior at South Western High School, scored a 266.75 in a meet against Carlisle High School on Thursday, January 12, 2012 to break the school’s six dive record.
The previous men’s six dive record of 240.85 was accomplished during the 2002-2003 school year by Jeff Salgado. The score of 266.75 is the highest six dive score in the history of South Western High School and is fourth on the all-time YAIAA six dive list.
Beaghan is a two-time York County Diving Champion, a two-time PIAA District 3 medalist and PIAA State Diving competitor.

The South Western School District, Dr. Rupp, and Mr. Graves were recognized by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) organization at the School Board Meeting last evening.
Nomination for the award was initiated by Mr. Tyler Sieg who serves in the Navy Reserves and who is being deployed to South America for several months. Employers who work with service men and women are recognized by ESGR for making accommodations in the work environment while our soldiers perform their duty near and far. Retired Colonel Aston and Tyler presented the awards on behalf of ESGR.
We wish Tyler safe travels and a safe return to South Western High School where he teaches Electronics, Pre-Engineering, and Power Technology in the Tech. Ed. Department. We are very proud of him and his service to our country.
