Sportsmanship Recognition

Congratulations to our Mustang Football and Cross Country Teams for being recognized for the Fall Sportsmanship Award through the YAIAA League from opposing coaches!

If you have been following this blog you will remember that our Mustang Football Team was recently recognized for the same type of award from the Football Officials Organization.

Our student athletes are not only fantastic on the field, but they compete with a fierce sense of pride that does not cross the line of sportsmanship!  This can be attributed to the leadership of our coaching staff who teach our athletes how to win humbly and lose respectfully.

Well done ! Well done!  Well done!  We are VERY proud of our student athletes who represent themselves, our team and our school with honor!

Tri-M Music Honor Society

For the first time ever, South Western High School conducted a ceremony for outstanding music students through the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Tri-M stands for Modern Music Masters and it is a national organization that recognizes students who qualify in all four categories of: Character, Leadership, Scholarship, and Musicianship.  Membership into Tri-M also includes students to audition and interview with the music teachers from the high school music department.

The first annual induction ceremony was held on Thursday, December 3, 2009, as we celebrated the accomplishments of twenty-eight students and also the beginning of a new Tri-M Chapter at SWHS.

After the formal ceremony the audience was treated to the performances of ten students who shared their musical talents.  What a wonderful tradition that has begun in the Corral!

H1N1 Vaccines

SWHS students who registered to receive the H1N1 vaccine will be able to do so on Wednesday, December 9, 2009.

Students will be called to the gym during the school day on Wednesday to receive the injection or nasal spray.  Any student who originally registered to receive the vaccine through our school but then went to their doctor in the meantime for the vaccine, should let our high school nurse, Mrs. Wendy Zimmerman, know as soon as possible.  We will remove the student’s name from our list.

Unfortunately, we are not accepting new permission forms at this point.

We have sent letters home to the students who registered for the vaccine and the letters should be received by Friday of this week.  All information related to this topic will be found in the letter or by going to our district web site www.swsd.k12.pa.us

Community Partnership

On Monday, November 23, several members of the South Western High School Student Council collaborated with the York County Area Agency on Aging APPRISE Program to sponsor a “Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Event.” This annual program assists Medicare beneficiaries during the open enrollment period (this year November 15 through December 31). The program provides personalized assistance and insight from trained APPRISE Counselors.

The students, who are comfortable with navigating the Internet, guide participants through personalized drug plan comparisons and the on-line enrollment (this program only permits on-line enrollment which is why we partner to provide computer access and student volunteers).  In addition to the event goals, our students enjoyed interacting with seniors from our community and it seemed as if the reverse was true also!
For more information on the program or to check for future locations and dates, call APPRISE at 717-771-9042 or 1-800-632-9073.

Win-Win

Recently, the Harrisburg Area Community College (Gettysburg Campus) and the South Western School District came to an agreement to offer adult education evening welding classes.  This is a win-win situation since not only will adults in the area benefit from this opportunity, but the students at South Western High School will have the chance to earn college credit during the school day for the same course!

This is possible because our metal teacher, Mr. Bruce Lee, will be able to provide a college-level curriculum during the day and in the evening since he will be the instructor for both educational institutions.  Students will learn the proper process of welding using Tig, Mig, and Stick  in addition to brazing using oxyacetylene.

As a result of this agreement HACC has agreed to purchase several thousand dollars worth of new equipment that will become the property of South Western!

Classes for the adult evening courses will begin in the Spring of 2010.  Registration and more information can be obtained by calling 717-337-3855.

What a great opportunity for ALL of our students!

Toys for Tots Manufactured Wood Project

Wood and Plastics 2

Mass Production Project

Mr. Buchanan’s Wood and Plastics second level course recently completed a mass production project, in which they designed and manufactured 25 wooden toy trucks to be donated to Toys for Tots.

The students started out by determining what they wanted to make, then developed a prototype.  From the prototype, they then determined all of the manufacturing processes and materials needed to complete the production.  After determining the process they would follow, individual students interviewed with the class for the specific jobs they desired to have during the production run.   Jobs they held included everything from traditional machine operators, quality control, and assembly to more advanced skills such as CNC Router operation.

Recently a representative from the Toys for Tots program and a US Marine came to the High School and met with the class.  They discussed the benefits of the program and its history then they thanked the students for their time and donations.

Here is a link to an article about the wood project that appeared in the Hanover Evening Sun
